PAINTING TECHNIQUES
REINDEER PORTRAIT

For this project, 3rd-grade students learned about different painting techniques and how using these techniques produces different results. Students completed a worksheet by following along with the teacher. After the students tried out all 4 painting methods, they practiced using these methods to paint the tree on the bottom of the worksheet (see link below for downloadable worksheet).

On the 2nd and 3rd day of the project, students create a winter-themed reindeer painting. The first part of the project is a directed drawing. After that, students use different colored paints to create the fur and background of their paintings. Students were required to use a couple of different painting techniques during this project.

This project could easily be modified and changed to allow for ever more flexibility. Instead of painting a reindeer, students can try painting a landscape or a portrait of a historical figure using the learned painting methods.
