CITY DESIGN

2nd Grade students got to take a hands-on approach in designing a city and creating a collaborative project.

The lesson started out by talking about what makes up a city or neighborhood and what we can typically find within a neighborhood. Students also used this time to talk about art and where art exists in towns and neighborhoods. We talked about whether an entire town could be considered art or not.

Students viewed the artwork of Yin Xiuzhen, who makes 3D sculptures of the places she visits. Students responded to her artwork and pointed out many observations.

Before the building could begin, students were asked to think about what teamwork looks like and how to minimize conflict when sharing materials. Students were able to share materials very well and design a collaborative city design. At the end of the work session, students viewed each other's cities and pointed out things they noticed.
