BOARD GAME

In this lesson, students take the familiar framework of a board game, and create their own world, characters, and set of rules. The lesson begins with defining the various components of a board game, such as the map, a character/token, and start + end points.

Students began by viewing works of art by artist Christine Wong Yap. Wong Yap incorporates maps into her artwork. Each map she creates has significance to the particular community it is based off of, and they often include important locations in the community that are picked by the people who live there.

The students started off by designing their personal avatar characters. These are the pieces that they would use to play the game. The students were encouraged to be expressive with the avatars, and to incorporate their personal interests and identities into the characters.

The students worked in groups of 4-5 while completing this lesson. Some students had trouble agreeing on how the map should look and how the game should be played. At the end of the day, the students enjoyed playing their new game together, and were hesitant to stop at the end. This lesson required group thinking and decision making, increasing the students' team-working skills
